How was the Blizzard caused?
The Blizzard was caused by a freezing cold front from the Arctic and the warmer air from The
Gulf Of Mexico. Within hours the temperature fell from a few degrees above freezing to -20. At the peak of the storm
the temperature was around -40. This cold came along with heavy snow and and high winds.

What were some of the experiences from the Blizzard?
Many stories erupted from the horrible incident. Many also ended with tragedy.
One teacher, Lois Royce, found herself trapped in a schoolhouse with three of her
students. They quickly ran out of heat so she attempted to lead the children to her
boarding house which was only 86 yards away. In the high winds and heavy snowfall
they became lost, the children could not sustain themselves in the freezing weather
and froze to death. The teacher however, was found and was mostly unharmed except
for her frostbitten feet which had to be amputated.

What is The Children's Blizzard?
The Children's Blizzard was a harsh, unexpected
winter storm that happened on January, 12,
1888. It is called the Children's Blizzard
because it hit so randomly, trapping many
children in one-room schoolhouses.This storm
is also sometimes called the Schoolhouse Blizzard.
It hit the American Plains the strongest. The reason
that the storm was so deadly was mainly because it
hit during work and school hours. Also it was very
warm before it actually hit. Approximately 500
people died that day from hypothermia and thousands
were stranded at work or school.
